Germaine Hammon, artist
I was born and raised in the Netherlands, land of open spaces, wind, water and sky. The Dutch landscape has been celebrated in thousands of paintings by the world most famous of artists. Art is celebrated in the Dutch culture, so during my childhood I was able to visit many wonderful museums.
Earlier in life, my creative endeavors were focused on the more practical aspects of life. I designed and custom made my own clothes. Later on, I became involved with fiber arts and learned spinning and dying with natural dyes. The next step was jewelry making. My career as a Dental Ceramist helped me in understanding form and the nuances of color.
Not until later in life the desire to express myself with paint became more real to me. After working with watercolor, I discovered the beauty of pastels, the vibrancy and immediacy is very exciting to me. The colors come alive and shimmer after being applied to paper. The last step has been to start working with oil paint. It is after all a master painter's medium and a nice compliment to pastel.
Painting has brought me many hours of wonder and joy. I can not imagine life without it.
